How we estimate this
Planning numbers based on typical 2026 rates for your area, not a quote. Your bills will differ.
- Energy: pump run time by pump type and pool size, plus heating if you heat. Electric and gas rates for the nearest major city to your ZIP, from its utility.
- Water: evaporation for the nearest major city's climate, plus refills from splash-out and filter backwashing. Local water rates.
- Chemicals and service: chemicals every pool needs, plus weekly service labor if you pay for it.
- Insurance: the typical added cost of a pool on a homeowner policy.
- Repairs and resurfacing: pumps, filters and heaters wear out, and plaster usually needs redoing every 10 to 15 years. We spread those costs across each year.
- Yearly increases: each cost rises at roughly its pace over the past decade in California. Water and gas about 5% a year, PG&E electricity about 6% (city-owned utilities like SMUD, Roseville Electric, Palo Alto and Silicon Valley Power about 3%), homeowner insurance about 6%, repairs and resurfacing about 4%, service labor about 3.5%, and chemicals about 3%.
